Thuringian State Institute for Forestry, Game and Fishery


The Thuringian State Institute for Forestry, Game and Fishery, Gotha/Germany, is an executive support and research unit of the Thuringian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Nature Protection and Environment. Established in 1990 it is responsible for developing forest management and silviculture strategies and implementing forest inventories for state forests and municipal forests. Additionally, the institute supervises and implements ecosystem monitoring programs in Thuringian forests and is in charge of forest protection and pest control.

In terms of management of nature conservation areas in forests and woodlands the institute works out or assists the work on management and development plans. The responsibility for forest dominated habitats according to the Habitats Directive (Council Directive 92/43/EEC) is put on the institute. Thus, it is involved in legislation processes regarding policy guidelines and administrative issues for protected forest areas.

Finally, the TLWJF gives assistance to all forest ownerships in Thuringia, organises training and education curses for different target groups and fulfils an educational mandate.

Contribution of the partner to the project:

Risk assessment for forest ecosystems caused by climate change in the biosphere reserve Vessertal and developing adaptation strategies, knowledge transfer and education of regional decision makers.
