Danube Delta National Institute for Research and Development


The Danube Delta National Institute for Research and Development (DDNI) is a National Institute. DDNI has been nominated Centre of Excellence for Deltas & Wetlands; National Reference Centre for Land Cover and Fisheries. DDNI has conducted in cooperation with RIZA, The Netherlands studies on lakes in the Danube Delta. DDNI is also the main scientific advisor of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development for establishment of NATURA 2000 network in Romania. DDNI coordinated several projects in order to achieve the objectives of the National Strategy for Environment Protection, focused on the enlargement of the network of protected areas, rehabilitation of the coastal infrastructure, improvement of ecological and economical features of the Danube Delta, coordination of activities focused on inventory & GIS mapping of the natural habitats and gathering data on distribution of wild species for selection the Sites of Community Interest (SCI) and Special Protection Areas (SPA). DDNI coordinated restoration projects of Danube Delta agriculture polders and the ecological restoration of Danube river flood plains.

DDNI coordinated the process aiming the completion of N2000 Standard Sheets for SCIs and SPAs, being nominated to develop a set of standard criteria for monitoring of the current status of species and natural habitats occurring in N2000 sites from Romania. DDNI is national coordinator of the CORINE LAND Cover project within GMES land FTSP project of The EEA (European Environment Agency). Abroad expertise includes co-operation with Wetland International for water quality assessment in Russia (West Siberia) and Mali (Niger inner Delta).

Contribution of the partner to the project:

Hydrological scenarios for extreme events, assessment of flooding areas and of habitat changes as a result of hydrological changes, effects on biodiversity, mitigation options for adaptive management.
